What Is America?!

It seems to me that the cultural war being waged world-wide right now boils down to this question - what direction will America take out of the current global conflicts, how will she navigate the information war that threatens to use the mid-term elections in November to up-end the Trump administration?

Who will end up on the "wrong side" of history?

Maybe "it's the economy, Stupid!". The countries with the genuinely free-enterprise productive economies will set the pace for everyone else to keep up with. Countries with innovative broadly-based productive economies who boast the minimum of top-down central direction (open or clandestine) will have the advantage over those with narrowly-based economies (eg: oil) because they will be vulnerable to innovations which bypass the need for their particular product.

That obviously rules out the UK under current establishment leadership, and pretty much all of the EU. And probably China under the CCP, which has the mind-set of a control-freak.

It also rules out America under its past clandestine rulers (think CIA-Mossad etc).

Only free enterprise economies which are the most productive will (a) have the wherewithal to prosecute a destructive war and (b) the incentive not to do so, because the resulting impoverishment would be (all else being equal) intolerable to the population. Any war would therefore tend to be defensive rather than offensive.

(I note that the term "free enterprise" has been hijacked to describe Wall Street and the City of London, in other words Big Corporations under opaque ownership that always seems to trace back via Black Rock, State Street, and Vanguard, i.e.: just another centralised top-down structure that values its invisibility, and gave us Covid and Big Pharma)

Madmen and Evil Empires excepted of course, but history indicates that these are short-lived when confronted by peaceful productivity.

So what direction will America take in the coming mid-term elections in November? She has a fight on her hands ...

Christianity from a Critical Perspective

I had a Christian (C of E) upbringing, but from what one might call a social / traditional / practical rather than a religious perspective. We didn't discuss the Bible at home and we didn't say our prayers religiously before bed, although we did on occasion say a perfunctory "grace" before meals.

As a teenager I felt that the Church as an institution was a bit dyed-in-the-wool, that there was little point in dressing up the choir in cassock and surplice and processing in and out, and that there was too much blind faith and not enough real thought about the meaning of Christianity (and don't get me started on Heaven and Hell and Christ as a sacrifice to appease God the Father for our human failings ... in the inevitable words of Dr Heinz Kiosk: "We Are ALL GUILTY!" ).

What kind of religion is that?

And is it based on anything that Jesus himself is actually recorded to have said or done?

And how do we know that what is recorded in the Bible is all actually genuine? 

Who knows what the Council of Nicea got up to under Roman Emperor Constantine?

In short, is there anywhere available a cold hard critical look at "the Bible" as handed down to us that takes into account the possibility that between then and now, it has been messed with (for example by the many followers of Satan, perhaps by Constantine or later by the Vatican or its supporters that used to burn heretics at the stake (even for translating the Bible into English!!) in a decidedly unChristian manner, and by the thousand (the Cathars) if necessary)? 

And if it really hasn't been messed with, then how on earth was that prevented, given the length of time and numerous religious wars etc that have occurred between then and now? Is the belief that God would magically defend it from being messed with not stretching faith just that wee bit too far to provide real comfort?

Humph.

Enter Bart Ehrman, who applies a critical attitude to his Christianity studies, taking nothing on blind trust. At last, somebody who can maintain faith in Christ whilst questioning everything, and accepting that the dogmas of the various "Christian" denominations may be and inevitably are flawed, probably seriously.

I don't suppose he has everything right (the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill hasn't exactly covered itself in Covid "gain of function" glory) but at least he's prepared to ask awkward questions.

Ian Clayton of Ethical Approach UK has now published his four part report into the the way in which the Metropolitan Police handled the rejection of CRN 6029679/21 under Operation Talla.

"Its purpose is not to determine criminal liability, nor to invite predetermined conclusions regarding the conduct of any individual or institution. Those are matters reserved to those exercising lawful investigative and judicial functions"
