Whatever happened to "nothing is certain except death and taxes"?

Still, if the Bernician is correct (and that's where I would put my money), the Brexit-in-name-only crew in our "mother of parliaments" have perpetrated a massive screw-up which might bankrupt the government. Furthermore...

What is it? Does the Fed practise it? Does the Bank of England practise it?

    "Money is a Commodity

No it isn't. I don't like to disagree with the presenter, but I must.

Money is the hydraulic fluid that courses through the pipes of the financial system and enables people to sell the goods that they produce into the markets, and to buy the goods that others produce from the markets.

Money represents goods and services produced. But it is liquid - it can be subdivided (unlike goods and services) and swapped for other goods and services of different value. Money enables markets and obsoletes barter.

Like liquids, money can be stored in tanks (banks) for use at a future date. This enables lending and borrowing without distorting the markets' price discovery

  • World in Transit - Fulford Report Monday 26 May 2025

    2025-05-26

Ben's report today reviews the steps being taken (or appearing to be taken) to move the world forward into a new world order without irreparably breaking it in the process.

The orderly path to a new financial commercial and military global settlement clearly isn't straightforward, but those who pull the stings behind the scenes do at least seem to be talking still.

On the other hand, the necessary changes will of necessity involve some much-trailed level of disorder, so fear not, life is in little danger of becoming dull and predictable any time soon.

This was all explained under Mrs Thatcher by the BBC - the example is of course the UK government, but the principles no doubt apply to all governments, especially the democratic ones, which really is no laughing matter...

    2025-05-25

So far it hasn't been clear what Trump's foreign policy will develop into, once the dust has settled on his domestic success, although disengagement with the EU has been made a reasonably clear objective.

JD Vance (and Trump) addressed the new West Point graduates of the US military - and seem to have ruffled not a few expectations.

It's the UK case that prompts his update this week.

  • The Covid Lawfare Against Dr Robert Young

    2025-05-24

A film by Mikki Willis about the trial of medical researcher and outspoken Big Pharma critic Dr. Robert Young, whose father Dr Robert O. Young wrote books about how to maintain good health.

In fact, one of his books - "The pH Miracle" - was instrumental in my own recovery from eating carelessly... when we are young we can eat whatever we feel like and we can get away with it, but when we get older our body's need for good nutrition at some point becomes critical, and we can no longer eat carelessly. The pH Miracle set me on the right path to recovery (urticaria + middle-age spread since you ask) and I have never looked back.

I believe it's true to say that most don't understand that the body needs to maintain its alkalinity, and to that end it will strip the nutrients it needs from its very bones if necessary. But if we eat the right foods that support alkalinity in balance with those

  • The Delusion of Politeness

    2025-05-24

A thoughtful piece in the Daily Sceptic this morning give pause for thought.

There's certainly something in it, and it certainly highlights a challenge - how best to respond to an unexpected challenging situation that we have not prepared for? In the moment, we tend to resort to the least confrontational response, but is that the best response?

    Could we do better?

Clearly it's time to try a different approach that doesn't sacrifice truth for delusion, but does help others toward seeing things differently.

Until the truth is widely recognised, we must keep plugging it.

The Brownstone Institute obliges by publishing an introduction to Debbie Lerman's new book, which will I'm sure remind readers of their own reactions to the implausible events of 2020, events which (we eventually recognised) could only have occurred through unconscionable malfeasance by hitherto trusted authorities on a global scale.

This was going to be big, unprecedentedly so, and so it proved.

  • Chinese Mystery - Where Did the 1.4 Billion Go?

    2025-05-23

We have noted this conundrum before, but some think that China's population is now far lower than the claim of 1.4 billion.

This is a rather more detailed look at the possibilities, but I suspect that the truth may be that those who know the answers are not telling...

... but there again, this YT channel has been posting some very unconventional views (even by my standards) so maybe we should remain cautious of taking it at face value. Nevertheless, it would seem that something is up, just not the population numbers.

  • The Dark Side of A I ?

    2025-05-23

Is A I all it's cracked up to be?

Certainly Martin Geddes believes it to be very useful in making sense of legal issues, where exhaustive searches of legal precedent (or even merely of the Statute Book!) are beyond the reach of most.

And yet... on the other side, there are those who believe that an AI that eliminates the need for people to work in their traditional employment may not be in the interests of the population at large.

The Luddites thought similarly when factories introduced automation to handle jobs previously undertaken by humans, but if they had had their way, modern man would look and live much like pre-automation man and thelabour-saving technology that today

  • A Penetrating Glimpse of the Obvious?

    2025-05-22

    It's not rocket science.

    It is logic.

But politicians have proven over many years that they don't "do" logic.

So here, Sebastian Sas spells it out in uncompromising terms, in the vain hope that perhaps some of the said politicians might get at least part of the message. A small fraction would be nice, as it might indicate some residual ability that could be built on in the hope of making eventual progress.

Meanwhile, it is entertaining in a rather futile way, but it does make one wonder if perhaps an AI might make a better job of world leadership ..?

Or do they act so dumb in a desperate attempt to hide their true motivations?

    2025-05-22

The EU has been flirting with nuclear power for years - but mighty Germany has been determinedly anti nuclear ever since the tsunami washed into Fukushima.

But since the Putin-Trump telephone call it seems that it has begun to dawn, even on German politicians, that the Dunkelflaute may not have what it takes to resurrect German industry in recreating the necessary armaments industries to face up to the challenge from the East.

All of which is a welcome if unexpected outbreak of good sense (even if for all the wrong reasons) since if both Germany and France support nuclear then that's probably enough to sway the rest of the EU block.

And it leaves Ed Milliband in an even
