This title "The Ascent of Man" is that of a 13 part 1973 BBC documentary series by a Polish immigrant to Britain, Dr Bronowski. He came to this sceptred isle at the age of 12 in 1920, was educated in England, and was thus (almost!) as English as the rest of us.
Perhaps he was a forerunner of today's deep thinkers who are also feeling their way (through experience and adversity rather than formal education) to develop a better understanding of the universe in which we live.
Possibly the prime example of such a deep thinker today would be Clif High, who in many ways is documenting his evolving understanding of the ascent of man in his own inimitable style (just not on the BBC).
Set him alongside others such a Alex Krainer who are doing their bit to make sense of the current evolution of geopolitics (which perhaps has never been both so complex and so accessible via social media) and we are privileged as never before in this civilisation's history to have a ring-side seat to observe and witness these "interesting times".
Whether we regard this as a blessing or a curse is up to each of us ... but it's OK to reserve judgement!
And Clif may have some remaking to do of his relationship with Heidi ...
