  • Reducing collisions
  • More opportunities to walk or cycle
  • Improved health and well-being
  • Safer streets
  • Safeguarding the environment

So what could all this be about?

"Reducing emissions from transport requires fundamental change that reaches deep into society and the lives of individuals"

And there I was thinking that if we all bought electric cars the emissions would cease ... apparently not.

Of course, if we all have to drive around in 3rd gear, we know that from past experiments with 20 mph limits (and speed humps) that the emissions will go up due to the inefficiency of the infernal combustion engine at higher rpm (although those few who can afford to drive electric vehicles may indeed use marginally fewer electrons and feel smug about it).

So when that happy fact becomes obvious again, they will probably reduce the 20 mph limits to 10 mph ...

" ... I can't see any carrots ... all I see is sticks ... "

Where will it all end?

How long before we are all to be fitted with a ball and chain to slow us down and safeguard us from tripping through walking too fast over uneven pavements?

Is there really no alternative?

Well, I suppose that if you're an Assembly Member, every supposed problem must require either a new restriction or a new tax.

If you're an ordinary citizen, every supposed problem should first be demonstrated to be real and significant, every proposed solution should be subject to a published expert risk/benefit assessment - and you might well be thinking that abolishing the Welsh Assembly and saving the taxpayer a gargantuan sum in running costs (not to mention improved mental health) is beginning to look like an idea whose time is definitely coming.

Oh wait ...

" ... Cambridge is already proposing to follow this model, and others will follow them ... "
